LAGOON ARAXOS
Araxos Lagoon is situated on the borders of the protected region at the north-west edge of the Peloponnese.
It has an area of 450 hectares and an averaged depth of 0.5 – 2.5 metres.
It is separated from the Gulf of Patras by an elongated sandy islet and extensive sand dune formations from the Ionian Sea.
The waters here are brackish and have a higher salinity in comparison to the other wetlands.
Gulls and herons are the permanent residents of Araxos.
